Putting Myself in their Shoes

So I love to read. I always have. It's the way I entertain myself, the way I escape reality (like the stress of the first week of my senior year, for example...), and a way I learn more about other people and cultures.

As I've gotten older, I've realized that part of why I love to read is that I love to connect with the characters. The more I can relate to and love the characters in the book, the more I'll like the book as a whole. The plot doesn't matter as much to me.

Last week I was reading Simon vs. the Homo Sapien Agenda for the second time, and I love how much I relate to Simon. Going through high school (and honestly, college too) is a time of finding yourself and learning who you are, and there are times when that has been really hard for me, just like for Simon. But seeing how brave he is in this book shows me that I can be authentic too, and I can be myself--I should be myself. I love the courage and comfort that books and characters can give me, even though they aren't real.

  2. I love that your media focus this week was on reading. I think that we all too often don't think of books as media, because there has been such a shift to increasing technology and screen based everythings recently. I think it's important that we incorporate this type of media use into our lives!
