Sometimes I forget that textbooks count as media, too. I'm often just floored by how different two textbooks can be. My textbook for Adolescent Development is pretty difficult to read, just because of how boring it is! But my textbook for Healthy Sexuality, Sexual Wholeness in Marriage, is much easier to read. I think part of it is how short the chapters are--Sexual Wholeness in Marriage doesn't go into too many topics in one chapter. It breaks up the topics, making it more manageable. Also, Sexual Wholeness in Marriage was written to be understood by the general public, which means its tone is much more conversational and inviting. Honestly, I don't know why more textbooks don't write in a more exciting way. I love learning in my classes, so that proves that the subject matter isn't boring--it's just the textbooks!
Textbooks can definitely be the worst! I have such a hard time with reading the more informational ones (or I did back when school was my top priority and I read textbooks). I agree that textbooks could be a lot more effective if they were more focused on breaking down subject matter and using more conversational tones than on how to change a few sentences and drive the price up for a new edition every year. ;)
ReplyDeleteAt this point I feel like I just skim through my textbooks rather than read through whole chapters. It is just too much haha.
