Media Violence

So, I really like crime shows and kind of dark, gritty shows like that. I'm not entirely sure why they appeal to me as much as they do--maybe it has something to do with how I really wanted to be a forensic scientist when I was younger (thank you, NCIS, for that dream).

Anyway, a few weeks ago I started watching Hannibal (yeah, I know, I told you I liked dark shows haha), and it has been really interesting to watch it while thinking back to our lecture about media violence. Specifically, it made me think about how watching unjustified violence where you see the consequences of the violence actually make viewers less likely to accept or perpetrate violence. I have definitely seen that in my experience with Hannibal. I mean, it's literally a show about a serial killer/cannibal. Hannibal's crimes are never justified, and all of the violence in the program shows the consequences--none of the "I just got into a huge fight but don't have a scratch" nonsense you see in superhero movies.

Honestly, maybe that's why I like this type of show so much--stories about crime, I mean. I like how they don't romanticize violence, but instead portray it as negative, no matter if it is being instigated by a villain or law enforcement. It's just interesting to watch and see how they portray these darker themes, and I'm glad that so many of the shows I watch make a point to show that violence is definitely NOT okay.

  1. I like your thoughts about shows that don't romanticize violence! However I don't think I will ever be watching Hannibal haha.
